Five for Friday

Happy Saturday, Friends!

I'm back again this week to link up with Doodlebugs Teaching for another:

This week we were finishing up our learning on Data Analysis. In 3rd grade, students are required to   create their own pictographs and bar graphs and be able to analyze their data as well. So..to practice this skill students were put into groups. With their partners they were required to generate a question they wanted to collect data on. For homework, they went home and conducted their surveys. The next day in school, they organized their data then created a bar graph and pictograph to represent the data collected. They then generated questions that other students would need to answer in regards to their graphs.

Some of the graphs included these topics: Favorite fun thing to do, favorite pizza topping, favorite NFL team, favorite sport, favorite gaming system, favorite flower, favorite color, and favorite food.

Once all of the posters were done I went and hung/posted them all throughout our classroom. I announced to the students that we would be playing Musical Math Mania!! They were sooo excited but had no clue what the game even was! LOL.

I played some music and they would boogie around the room. As soon as the music stopped they needed to quickly get to the nearest poster and start analyzing the data! They recorded the answers to the questions on their posters in their math notebooks. When the music started again, they would be able to boogie around the room again until the music stopped.

They LOVED this game and got a lot of really great practice in and didn't even realize it!

We started working on contractions this week. The students had so much fun working on this center, I decided to give it a facelift and add to my TPT store.

I've also decided to put it on sale for only $2.00 for the rest of this weekend!

This week we also started learning about fractions.
I did an introductory lesson to fractions using Whole Brain Teaching for my observation. I think it went pretty well. We spent some time discussing what fractions were, looked at examples, talked about fraction examples and non-examples then did a quick assessment on our learning using these task cards

All 28 of my students demonstrated complete understanding after our introductory lesson!

Whole Brain Teaching has truly transformed my teaching…. If you have never heard of WBT, definitely check it out!! There are even opportunities for FREE WBT conferences here!

Here is an awesome video of the fabulous Farrah Shipley teaching fractions to Kindergartners!!

Once the kids got down fraction of a whole, we moved on to fraction of a set. We called up on some students to the front of the room and started identifying fractions. 1/4 of the students are girls, 3/4 of the students are boys, etc. I then had the kids draw themselves and had them add as much details as possible. They put themselves onto their poster boards then wrote fraction sentences about their groups!

I hope you have a great weekend!

Happy Easter and a Freebie to Celebrate!!

Happy Easter to Everyone out in Bloggy World!! :) I hope you are all enjoying this wonderful and beautiful day with your family and friends, and of course..Good Food!!

This will be a quick post because I need to get the chicken frying and desert baking. We are heading to my boyfriend's parents house for Easter dinner! I haven't even begun cooking yet.

Anyways, I haven't uploaded a freebie in awhile so here is more morning math work! This file will contain all sheets to be used for the entire month of April. I've uploaded this file to my TPT store so go ahead and get your free copy!! It will only be free until Monday, then it will become my first item that I will be selling! I don't know who you all do it with your units. This took me so long to format (probably because I did it in word). I usually type my math sheets up in word but think from now I will do it in powerpoint. I made my cover sheet in power point but couldn't figure out how to transfer my word document over to PPT. Any tips?!

Alrighty...well there I go rambling again!! Please head to my TPT Store to grab your copy of my morning math sheets.

This month your kids will be able to practice and review: place value, rounding, fractions, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and elapsed time word problems. YES, Definitely getting ready for state testing!! This is a great review for my kids since we never have the time to go back and review all of these things! Hope you can find this useful in your classroom. Leave me some tips and comments since I'm a major newbie to TPT :)

Have a Blessed Day!

Rainy Days

Have you ever heard other teachers say that their students tend to 'act out' or 'get crazy' when it's rainy, windy, or full moon?? I find it so funny how it coincidentally happens  that everybody's kids can be wild at the same time. WELL..here in beautiful Hawaii it has been STORMING like crazy this week. Luckily, yesterday my kiddos were amazingly well behaved, focused and completely engaged. I felt so proud when all the other teachers were complaining about how their kids were driving them nuts.

It seems that every Monday morning the copier seems to not work. I need to learn my lesson and make my copies on Friday from now on. Well, since all that I was planning on doing got chucked when the copier broke I had to improvise. I remember seeing this super cute idea on pinterest where they used easter eggs to show fractions. I had a whole bag full of eggs in my closet (from last year) so decided to have the kids show equivalent fractions!

I just wrote some equivalent fractions on the eggs and color coordinated different sets of bags I took apart the eggs and the kid shad to put them all back together.
Here they are working with partners to put together the eggs.

The kids really had so much fun doing this and I was truly able to see who understands their equivalent fractions and who doesn't. I also made a worksheet to go along with this for them to complete once their done. I'm still learning how to upload documents and saving them as pdf files so that fonts can be seen.

Well I'm off to watch the news and see what's new with this crazy storm. Last night the thunder was sooo loud it sounded like there were bombs going off! I've never in my life heard thunder this loud..loud enough to set off car alarms. **Forgot to mention, it even HAILED here today! Amazing and scary at the same time. I am enjoying this nippy weather and am off to curl up, watch the news and blog stalk. Here's a photo that I saw on Happy Hour Hawaii's Facebook page. Not sure who took it but it is an amazingly beautiful photo. Have a great rest of the week fellow bloggers :)
